These units cover a range of Maine Early Learning and Development standards focused on foundations for Early Literacy (print concepts, phonics and word recognition, key ideas and details, craft and structure, integration of knowledge and ideas), writing (composing for audience and purpose, process and production), and speaking and listening (comprehension and collaboration, presentation of knowledge and ideas, conventions of Standard English, vocabulary acquisition and use).
Unit content includes:
identify front and back of a book
identify that words and pictures tell a story
understand the direction of print
make predictions about stories
pose and answer specific questions about a text
associate sounds with letters and words
retell information from a story
recognize and name letters of the alphabet (including the letters of your name)
use scribbles, shapes, pictures, letter line symbols to represent thoughts and ideas
practice letter formation by tracing
practice crossing the midline
practice creating letters with a boundary (a box or between lines)
generate and share ideas to write about
practice fine motor skills - learn how to hold a writing utensil, learn how to move in space with a writing utensil, learn how to store a writing utensil when finished, etc.
model and practice using correct speech
practice initiating and sustaining a conversation with multiple exchanges
share and talk about a personal experience
recognize and practice rhyming words
recognize and practice alliteration
practice listening to and following directions
